Lip Injection Facts: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

Lip Injections San Diego Blog

Lip injections are a huge trend in San Diego. They are the go-to cosmetic treatment for the everyday woman who wants to have full, luscious lips. Full lips have become high in demand, in particular with the rise in popularity of the Kardashian sisters. Make sure you know the lip injection facts.

Why Dermal Fillers are Best Choice

Lip injections with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) are practical because your doctor or nurse can control the amount of filler he/she injects into your lips. At SDBotox we save unfinished syringes of Juvederm and Restylane, and you can return at a later date to finish it.  That way you don’t feel obliged to use everything all at once and end up with huge, fake appearing lips.  You can schedule your lip injections over a few appointments until they’ve obtained your desired lip appearance.

Also, when using soft lip fillers, any “lumps or bumps” created when you move your lips during your injections are quickly dissolved. With lip fillers such as Juvéderm or Restylane, there’s also less swelling and bruising. HA dermal fillers are less likely to cause allergic reactions compared to other lip injections such as Collagen.

In comparison, Juvéderm, Restylane, and other HA lip injections typically last six to nine months.

When you have dermal lip fillers injected into your lips, it can give your lips shape, structure, and volume. Also, fillers such as Juvéderm contain lidocaine or another local anesthetic. This helps minimize the pain during the injections.

Juvéderm Vs Restylane Dermal Fillers as Lip Injections.

Juvéderm injected into your lips can be done in the formulas of Ultra Plus, Volbella, Vollure and Voluma. All formulas boost your lips’ plumpness and can decrease wrinkles around your lips. There are subtle differences between the different products, but the biggest differences in these dermal fillers are duration and cost. Ultra Plus dermal fillers last nine months and cost $550, Volbella dermal fillers last 12 months and costs $400 for half a syringe, Vollure lasts 18 months and costs $700, and Voluma lasts 24 months and costs $900.
Similar to the Juvederm line, Restylane restores a loss lip fullness and “rehydrates “your lips by adding volume. Restylane Defyne is a fantastic lip filler and has resistance to stretching. Lips treated with Restylane Defyne will hold their form just as memory foam. The Restylane dermal filler lasts 9 months and costs $500, and Restylane lasts more than a year and costs $700. What Happens During Enhancement Injections?

Dermal lip injections are quick treatments done at a Doctor’s office. Prior to the dermal fillers, a numbing cream is used to minimize distress during the procedure. Collagen fillers also include lidocaine in their formulas. If the patient is still in a lot of pain, a dental block can be performed which further numbs the treatment site.
A treatment session for dermal lip fillers can take from 15 to 30 minutes. We suggest using an ice pack to reduce swelling and soreness afterward. Watch this video for a look into the process of a lip enhancement procedure!

After care for lip fillers

Avoid lipstick: Not using any lip products such as lipstick or lip chap is best to avoid infections after injections. Immediately post-treatment, your lips will appear larger.  This is a result of both the product injected and swelling as result of inflammation of the lip tissue.

Expect swelling for a couple of days: After a couple of days, this inflammatory response decreases and your lips reduce in size.  Some patients love this initial swollen couple of days, but most patients are happier once the swelling decreases.  For this reason, many patients opt to have lip dermal filler placed on Fridays, so they don’t have to see co-workers during the inflammatory phase.

Avoid immediate visits to the dentist: If you are considering getting dermal fillers, do not visit the dentist immediately after getting your injections. Often in dental treatment, your dentist has to stretch your face, which could displace the filler.

Don’t forget an ice pack: If you are experiencing any soreness or discomfort, try placing an ice pack on your lips. If you continue to feel pain, contact your doctor immediately.

Once your lips have healed, they shouldn’t feel any different than your natural lips felt before your treatment.

How much do lip injection cost in San Diego?

The cost of lip injections varies depending on the procedure, the experience of your doctor, and where you’re having your lip injections done. A doctor’s office is the safest place to have lip fillers as your doctor should be able to deal with any reactions or side effects you may have.

Price is determined by the dermal filler chosen. For instance, at SDBotox we charge $400.00 for a 0.6 ml/syringe of Juvéderm Volbella and the treatment lasts up to one year. For Juvéderm Vollure the cost is $700.00 for a 1 ml/syringe, but the injections are longer lasting for up to 18 months.

Restylane Defyne is a fantastic filler for lines around your lips and mouth, and SDBotox charges  $700 for a 1 ml/syringe of the solution. Here is an overview of the cost of lip injections for SD Botox Members and non-members:

Are Lip Fillers Right For You?

If you want to have plumper lips, dermal lip injections (or any lip fillers) are the cosmetic treatment of choice.

Having an accurate idea of what your lips will look like after your injections is vital. Before dermal filler injections, taking time to do some research and consult with your doctor is significant. Your doctor can help you realize what shape and degree of volume will suit your lips before you have the procedure performed. Make sure to voice your opinions and choose a practitioner who understands the goals of your treatment. Lip fillers can appear as natural as you’d like, so it’s important to understand your limits.

Understand the Pros and Cons of Lip Fillers

Your doctor can also share with you the ‘pros and cons’ of using certain lip fillers to help you decide what hyaluronic acid injections will work best for you. ‘Enhancing’ your lips is key. A person doesn’t want to end up with lip injections that cause their lips to appear alarmingly large or like they have permanent ‘duck lips.’  Your lips shouldn’t enter the room before you do, but remember, fillers can be removed if necessary.

Potential side effects, do lip injections hurt?

After undergoing lip injections, any side effects will likely be short-lived. With Juvéderm and Restylane lip fillers your recovery is usually quite quick. Lip injections are not known to be painful when administered by a medical professional. In fact, many hyaluronic acid lip injections contain lidocaine to relieve any pain from the procedure. However, side effects may include bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness at injection sites, and minimal bleeding.
Allergic reactions similar to reactions you would have with facial products could also occur. Experiencing itchy lips, in particular, would be a sign a certain lip filler isn’t the right lip filler for you.
Although complications are rare, if you are having any severe reactions to dermal lip fillers, contact your doctor immediately.
