Botox for crow’s feet: units, results & what to expect.
How it works, how many units you’ll need, what to expect, and how long it lasts — from the team at SDBotox.
Those little lines that fan out from the corners of your eyes when you smile? Those are crow’s feet — and they’re one of the most common reasons people try Botox for the first time. If you’re not sure how many units you’d need, what the appointment is like, or how long it lasts, this is your guide. Let’s get into it.
What causes crow’s feet?
Crow’s feet (the clinical name is lateral canthal lines) are the fine lines that spread out from the outer corners of your eyes. They come from a muscle called the orbicularis oculi — the circular muscle around your eye that contracts every time you smile, squint, or laugh.
Over years of all that movement, the skin on top of the muscle starts to crease, and eventually those creases stick around even when your face is relaxed. The skin around your eyes is also some of the thinnest on your body, so it tends to show this kind of wear earlier than other areas. None of that means anything is wrong. It just means you’ve done a lot of smiling.
How Botox smooths crow’s feet
Botox is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the specific muscle it’s injected into. For crow’s feet, your provider places small amounts into the orbicularis oculi muscle at the outer corner of each eye. With that muscle relaxed, it stops tugging the skin into those familiar creases, and the lines soften.
The goal isn’t a frozen, expressionless look. Done well, Botox for crow’s feet keeps your eyes bright and expressive while taking the edge off the deeper lines. A good injector treats just enough to soften the area while preserving your natural smile.
Botox has been FDA-approved for crow’s feet, so this is an on-label, well-studied use — not an experiment.
How many units of Botox for crow’s feet?
This is the question we hear most, so here’s the real answer. The FDA-approved dose for crow’s feet is 24 units total, or 12 units per side, placed across a few tiny injection points around each eye, per the Botox Cosmetic prescribing information.
That said, that number is a starting point, not a rule. Plenty of patients do beautifully with less — especially first-timers, or anyone who wants a lighter, more natural softening. Your provider tailors the amount to your muscle strength, the depth of your lines, and the look you’re going for. The right dose is the one that fits your face, which is exactly what your consultation is for.
What to expect during and after treatment
The appointment itself is quick — usually around 10 to 15 minutes. After a short consultation, your provider cleanses the area and uses a very fine needle to place the injections. Most people describe it as a quick pinch. There’s no numbing required for most patients, and no real recovery time.
You can head straight back to your day afterward. We’ll give you a few simple aftercare tips (you can read our full Botox aftercare guide for the details), like staying upright and skipping a hard workout for the rest of the day.
As for results: Botox doesn’t work instantly. Most people start to see a difference within a few days, with the full effect settling in around 10 to 14 days. So if you have an event coming up, plan your appointment a couple of weeks ahead.
How long does Botox for crow’s feet last?
For most patients, results last about three to four months. As the effect gradually wears off and the muscle starts moving normally again, the lines slowly return — and that’s your cue to book your next visit.
One important note: Botox appointments should be spaced at least three months apart. Treating more often than that isn’t recommended, and a good clinic will hold that line for your safety — not push you to come in sooner.
What does Botox for crow’s feet cost in San Diego?
Botox is priced by the unit, which means your total comes down to how many units your treatment actually calls for. Someone wanting a light softening of fine lines and someone treating deeper, well-established creases are looking at two different plans — so there’s no single flat price.
The clearest way to know your number is a quick consultation, where we look at your lines, talk through your goals, and map out a plan that fits. And with our new patient pricing, getting expert injections in San Diego is more accessible than a lot of people expect.
Is Botox for crow’s feet safe?
Botox has a long, well-studied track record, and serious problems are uncommon when it’s done by a trained injector. The most common side effects are minor and temporary: a little redness, swelling, or the occasional small bruise at the injection sites, which usually fades within a few days.
Because the eye area is delicate, technique matters more here than almost anywhere else. Placed incorrectly, Botox near the eyes can occasionally cause temporary eyelid drooping, though this is rare in skilled hands. That’s the whole case for choosing an experienced, medically supervised injector over a bargain pop-up: where your Botox goes is just as important as how much.
