Making the decision to get Botox treatment for the first time typically comes after a lot of careful thinking, and potentially more than one consultation with different healthcare professionals. Aside from the procedure itself, there are many tips for new Botox patients that must be followed both before and after the procedure in order to ensure the most successful results possible.
Here are 3 tips to follow before a Botox procedure and 3 tips after.

What to Do Before a Botox Procedure

1. Avoid any Blood-Thinning Substances for a Few Days Before your Treatment.

Yes, this includes alcohol. If you are on any blood-thinning medication, meet with your doctor and discuss the best course of action for you. Staying on blood-thinning medication on the days surrounding your treatment may cause excessive bruising and could lead to improper healing. Even supplements like Vitamin E and fish oil have blood-thinning properties, so disclose your full medical history and medication regime with your doctor.

2. Stay Hydrated!

Staying hydrated will ensure your skin will be in tip-top shape for your Botox injections. At least a week before your scheduled treatment date, make sure you drink plenty of water every day.

3. Eat Lots of Leafy Greens.

Leafy greens, like kale and spinach, for example, are full of Vitamin K. Vitamin K is known for reducing bruising, swelling, and inflammation—3 possible side effects of Botox treatments.

Tips for New Botox Patients: After the Procedure

1. Do NOT Touch or Massage the Affected Area.

Your skincare professional will warn you about this as well, but it is crucial not to irritate the affected area after receiving Botox treatment. This includes facial massages. There’s a chance that the treatment could be displaced, leading to inconsistent results.

2. Do Not Perform Strenuous Activity.

Strenuous activity may also displace the Botox treatment. It is generally advised to avoid activity for 4 hours after receiving Botox treatments. After that period, you could resume light exercise including upright yoga, walking, and jogging at a light pace. Wait at least 24 hours before long-distance running, weight training, and cross training.

3. Do Not Sleep Immediately After the Procedure.

It might be tempting to take a quick nap after your Botox treatment, but you will likely be advised not to lay down, and especially not to put any sort of pressure on the affected area. This is one of the most important tips for new Botox patients because of the potential damage it could cause. Consider making your appointment in the early morning if possible, so you are less tempted to rest afterward.
